Facts About Skunks

  • A skunk's spray is an oily liquid produced by glands under its large tail.
  • Skunks have poor to fair senses of hearing and smelling. They also tend to be somewhat clumsy runners due to stocky front legs.
  • Skunks can be carriers of rabies if they eat or are bitten by an infected animal. Skunk spray does not carry rabies.
  • Skunks are not all bad; they like to eat the garden bugs and slugs that damage crops.
  • Skunks can grow anywhere between 16-in. and 27-in. in length and generally weigh from 1-6 lbs.
  • Skunks can spray 13-23 ft. in a favorable wind-although they are usually only accurate for up to about 6.5 ft.

Nuisance problems: Pets or people sprayed by a skunk.  Overturned garbage cans, awful smells, and they are one of the most common wild animals to carry rabies.  Like moles they are landscape destroyers.  They turn over sod searching for grubs and insects.
  • Strong smell of skunks in the area
  • Holes or dens dub by your house
  • Sprayed dog or cat
  • Skunk sightings
  • Skunks living under your deck
Problem Solvers:  Just like most wildlife we trap and relocate skunks as well.  Once the animal is trapped, we use a tarp to lay over the trap so it calms the animal down so we don't get sprayed.  Lids on trash cans, barriers around decks, and grub free lawns will keep skunks away.
Note: If sprayed by a skunk apply peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap mixed together.  Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes.  you may have to apply a few times.  You can also try the oldest trick in the book; bathing in tomato juice.
