Opossum Removal Michigan

Things You Should Know About Opossums in Michigan

  • Opossums play dead when threatened.

  • Opossums are nocturnal.
Opossums have 2 litters per year.

  • Opossums carry their young in a pouch.

  • Opossums are skilled climbers.

Opossums are the only marsupial in North America, meaning they have a pouch that they carry their young in.  They have long prehensile tails which gives them another limb to use for hanging.  Opossums are usually found under decks and in sheds.  We sometimes find them in attics but that isn't generally the case here in Michigan.  They need a decent size opening to enter into the attic.

Nuisance Problems:  Opossums give off a strong odor and often times find places like your garage or under your deck to die.  No one likes the smell of a decaying animal.  They also get into dog food and annoy home owners pets.  Opossums aren't known for biting, but will give off a hissing sound when close to them to make you aware of them.  They will also "play opossum" if they feel threatened.  Basically they make themselves look dead and can give off the odor of a decaying animal because they know that most predators are not scavengers and will not go after bad meat.

Signs You May Have an Opossum Problem

  • Tampered trashcans, flowerpots, or bird feeders
  • Broken chicken eggs in a coupe.
  • Opossum droppings
  • Opossum sightings
  • Opossum tracks

Problem Solvers:  Trap and relocate is the best method. We actually find these animals the easiest to trap because they will eat anything so it doesn't take a lot of effort to get this critters into the trap.
